1981 Raleigh Bomber Mk.1 restoration – part one

It’s been over two years since I last had my grubby mitts on a Bomber, Raleigh’s iconic cruiser bike from the early 1980s.  Men (and some women… maybe) of a certain age get pretty misty-eyed about these bikes and, despite being slow, heavy and crudely made, it’s really not hard to see why when you see one in the metal.  Fast forward to 2015 and I’m delighted – after several weeks of conversations about custom specifications, budgets and deadlines – to be finally getting to grips with Rab’s Mk.1 Bomber for a full restoration.  Here’s a few ‘before’ and ‘during’ photos to get the ball rolling…

  1. Hi Alexander
Where can I get replacement decals for my bomber? I bought mine new in 1984 with a 3-speed hub all chrome. (The 3-speed was quickly removed due to slipping and as the fashion was back then replaced with a “motorcycle” hub and “staunch” chain.
Round about this time the original stickers also had to go.
I’m contemplating restoring the bike to its original spec, but if I cannot find the correct looking decals I would be dead in the water. Also sourcing proper chrome platers would be challenging.
