I’ve finally finished building the cosmic bike that’s been making customers’ jaws drop over the past few months.  Built to celebrate Dead Rats Cycles’ 8th birthday, this radical Ridgeback upcycle combines the profile of classic French randonneur velos with retro-futuristic TVR sports car colours as influences for a bespoke adventure bike that’s as unique as its new owner…

The 6061-T6 butted 54cm aluminium frame is custom finished with a special reflex lacquer so it appears to both blue and purple, depending on the light conditions and which angle it’s viewed from, plus a layer of sparkle is visible only when the sun shines on its frame.  My love of mixing black and silver components is evident throughout, with the paintwork this creates a distinctive overall aesthetic that’s… hard to capture in photographs!

The riding position is very comfortable, test rides show you’ll feel at home immediately no matter what the terrain.  The contrasting black cro-mo forks are an upgrade which, combined with the short stem and custom flared handlebars, provide wonderfully stable handling ideal for touring, commuting and gravel riding – just tune the tyre pressure and go.  But whip off the rack & mudguards and fit narrower 28mm tyres and its weight drops to just over 10kg, making it a sporty road/training bike too.  Want to get dirty?  Fit wider 38mm knobblies and head for the singletrack.

The wide ranging 2 x 9 speed drivetrain combines a 11-34 cassette and CNC machined chainrings with classic Shimano bar-end shifters connected to high quality derailleurs.  Tough new handbuilt wheels are shod with puncture resistant 32mm Schwalbe tyres and the bike slows/stops effortlessly with finely tuned v-brakes.  Further nice finishing touches include the metal headbadge – kindly sent to me by Ridgeback themselves – plus the randonneur style front luggage rack and retro brown finishing kit… a high attention to detail is evident throughout.
