Not necessarily the best bikes I’ve ever owned, here are my personal favourites:
1985 Raleigh Pursuit
At the tender age of 12 I suffered the first of my many knee injuries, one mile from completing my first 75 mile ride. My first road bike, I quickly outgrew the Pursuit and upgraded to a secondhand Criterium with fancy-pants Reynolds frame & aero brake levers! Many years later I built another rather different one.
1989 Ridgeback 602LX
It’s my 15th birthday and this brand new rigid, 21 speed beauty becomes my pride & joy. The Ridgeback was my first mountain bike, but was sadly stolen from my school 6 months later. Along with the late ’80s Konas, the 602LX made splatter paint a winner in my book.
1980s Vitus 979
Such a fun/scary bike and so very sexy. 12 speed Campagnolo groupset adorning the gorgeous, infamously flexible bonded aluminium frame – that acceleration!
1997 Saracen Kili Comp 853
Favourite mountain bike I’ve ever owned – a springy, nimble and beautiful frame that I rode all over the UK. Of all the Saracens I’ve owned, Lego is the one I should’ve kept. Bought as a frame only, I slowly upgraded this into my perfect XC bike before selling it on a whim.
1972 Velo Schauff tandem
I restored this old German beauty and it was such fun to captain! Finally sold the Schauff to a vintage bike hire company in London and it’s still in regular service to this day.
2011 Surly Karate Monkey
A super versatile tank of a bike in terms of what it could do and how it could be set-up, I wish I’d never sold it to be honest.
1990s Orbita Estoril
Built from the parts-bin and still going strong to this day after many years of service, the trusty hack deserves credit for its loyalty. With Schwalbe’s excellent Marathon Supreme tyres and simple 1×7 drivetrain, ‘Trolli” is used daily, serviced twice a year and never lets me down. It’s actually really good fun to ride too!
2014 Cotic Escapade
My current do-it-all bike, handles beautifully and is all the bike I need these days. Bought as a frame only and currently running 2×10 speed Shimano with 50/34 x 11/40 gearing as my winter mile-muncher.
