Peugeot Ventoux conversion – Part 1

Andrew’s 1980s Peugeot Ventoux singlespeed as delivered to my workshop, my role being to add 13 more gears on a strict budget.  And convince the owner to let me sort the rear brake and fit proper levers on the drops ;)

Little, if anything, remains of the original – even the forks have been swapped out at some stage.  Whoever did the conversion to singlespeed did a pretty nice job, the frame looks nice & clean in its all-white powdercoat, though – aside from the rear brake positioning – I’d probably have gone for a slimmer, more period correct chainset.  My parts list will include a 7 speed freewheel, downtube shifters & cables, a genuine Peugeot cable guide for the BB shell, front & rear mechs, 53/39t chainrings & and a new chain.  The chainring bolts look long enough to re-use and I’d like to fit drop-out adjuster bolts too.  Jobs include re-tapping the mech hanger, checking the (124mm) rear drop-out alignment, re-spacing the rear hub and re-dishing that lovely Mavic R10 rim and removing excess powdercoating from the shifter bosses, before fitting the above parts list and tuning to perfection…

  1. Hi Alexander, lovely bike, your project turned out really nice!

I’m making a similar conversion on the downtube shifters on my Peugeot Champagne with Shimano Golden Arrow levers. I have similar notches as on your pictures, but the levers require longer bosses with two flat spots (top and bottom). How did you solve this?

    Thanks! Michiel

    1. Thanks, would be interested to see your project. There was no issue for me really, all I had to do was remove excess paint on the bosses and smooth them off. The shifters I used are more modern than yours though. Alex :)
