Invented by Campagnolo in the 1920s to facilitate faster wheel removal in racing, the quick release skewer operates at the expense of security against theft and slippage of rear axles – they’re never used on track bikes.  As a general rule the enclosed/internal cam Campagnolo type of quick release operates with greater clamping force than external cam levers, making them more suited to vintage frames & singlespeed use.
