Dead Rats Cycles proudly presents a beautiful vintage British sports tourer that’s been lovingly built up with lots of new parts in the workshop.  The restored 64cm lugged chromoly Reynolds frameset provides the basis of a stylish steel steed for the tall rider, who’s looking for a traditional yet usable bike that’s equally at home on a daily commute as it is out in the hills…

The Dawes sports mostly restored vintage Japanese components, with some modern improvements such as the retro Spa Cycles compact chainset.  Tough and lovely Salsa wheels are shod with the touring cyclist’s favourite puncture resistant and reflective new Schwalbe Marathon tyres, though vertical 130mm rear dropouts make wheel replacement child’s play.  Crisp gear changing is ensured by the reliable and fully restored 16 speed Shimano SIS drivetrain with new chain, new cassette and new cables.  Meanwhile new rubber hoods, new pads and new cables improve the polished Shimano cantilever brakes.  The classic brown Brooks B17 leather saddle and matching new Brooks bar tape complement the beautiful vintage Sakae Ringyo quill stem and matching fluted SR seatpost.

The stunning, engraved NOS Nitto B132 handlebars are of the slightly flared shallow drop Randonneur variety, meaning they are as comfortable “in the drops” as they are “on the tops”.  Painstakingly restored vintage chrome plated mudguards (a joy to behold in their own right) are retro-fitted using quality new stainless steel together with a custom front mudflap and new rear reflector.  The bike’s designed for a rear luggage rack and the forks will take a low-rider too – just ask if you require any accessories.  Further smart finishing touches include the new headbadge – kindly sent to me by Dawes themselves – along with the vintage (and very rare) Dawes brake lever grips and a lovely retro (and very loud) new brass bell.

Refined, comfortable and as elegant as they come, this vintage new Horizon is ready when you are…
