In the early 1980s, 6 speed cassettes mounted on freehubs, began to replace the screw-on freewheel cluster. Fast forward 35 years and 9, 10, 11 and even 12 speed cassettes are now standard on modern bike drivetrains. Sheldon Brown explains the system in more detail here.
