Mid 1980s Orbit 501

Almost there with Jonathan’s 1980s Orbit 501 sports tourer after a complete rebuild to make it run more smoothly and feel more ergonomic.  It’s been in the family a long time and has a great deal of sentimental value.
Brand new parts include dual pivot brake calipers, Gatorskin tyres, freewheel, chain, cables, SKS mudguards and rear axle (the original was bent), plus upgrades to the derailleurs and a pair of old school Deore 6 speed thumbshifters from the DRC stash.  Previously it ran Simplex drivetrain with stem shifters and weak sidepull brakes.  I also replaced the twisted left hand Solida crank arm and rebuilt the bottom bracket.  I feel certain that, back in the day, the frame was dressed in parts from a Peugeot.  Overall there’s nothing fancy and the frame carries lots of patina, but it’s super clean and rides beautifully – just need to eek a wee bit more clearance on the front mudguard!
