1996 Kona Cinder Cone

Here’s Ian’s superb Cinder Cone after a rebuild in the workshop.  Ian brought the bike to DRC with a few nice components for a mechanical upgrade and overhaul.  Initially there was talk of a respray but as you can see there really is no need, the 26 year old Race Light is still in fine condition despite some hard-earned patina.  After stripping the bike down I re-aligned and cleaned up the frame, then I serviced the Impact headset and re-installed the Project Two forks, Velocity stem and Race Light bars.  The stunning Deore XT chainset is from my stock along with a new Shimano bottom bracket.  I then cleaned up the original wheels and derailleurs, with new pulleys for the rear mech.  XT rapidfire shifters replaced the OEM Grip Shifts and the ‘Curve’ canti brakes have been upgraded to classic Deore XT parallelogram v-brakes with Avid Speed Dial levers.  Ian also spec’d the classic Yeti grips, and the Cinder Cone also benefits from a new brake pads, cassette, chain and cables.  There’s something about the geometry of these ’90s Konas that looks so timeless; their stance is perfect and they absolutely fly on singletrack trails, which is great as this one was built to be a rider!
