1983 Evans 531

Scott’s 1983 Evans 531 workhorse on test after some TLC. I fitted modern dual pivot brakes brakes – Tektro R559 with external nut fittings – along with new pedals, freewheel, chain, gear cables and bar tape, and also replaced a broken rear spoke, plus there was some general dialling in to do. Not much of the original spec remains – apart from the 27″ front wheel with Campagnolo hub, the lovely GB stem, a chromed steel headset, Suntour Power shifters and Stronglight chainset – as the owner has kept it well maintained over years, upgrading along the way. A solid bike with plenty of patina, the Evans rides great. The brand has its roots back in the 1920s and made some great steel frames before it was sold and then franchised into a high street chain in the 1990s,
